How to Remove Your User Files & Settings

The first thing we do when a unit is received is remove all data from the hard drive. If the hard drive is defective and data can't be removed we drill through the platters. We follow NIST Pub 800 88 Compliance. There will be no trace of you on your device. However, you may feel more comfortable deleting your files before sending your device to us. If you need help backing up or saving your files, we do offer a data backup service if needed. Please contact us for more information.

Below is a quick run through of the easiest way to delete your user files. You may want to print these:

  1. Click the “Apple” in the top left of the screen and scroll down to and click on System Preferences.
  2. Once system preferences opens, click on the “Users & Groups" icon.
  3. After Users & Groups opens, click on the lock icon at the bottom left of the window and enter the administrator password.
  4. Make a temporary account. Click the plus icon to add a new user. Make sure to select "Administrator" on the New Account select box.
  5. Fill out the rest of the details and push the "Create User" button.
  6. Log out of your current account (Apple Icon > Logout) and log back in as the temporary account you just created.
  7. Click the “Apple” in the top left of the screen and scroll down to and click on System Preferences.
  8. Once system preferences opens, click on the “Users & Groups" icon.
  9. Click on the lock icon at the bottom left of the window and enter the password to your temporary account.
  10. Select the user account you want to delete in the list in the left of the window.
  11. Click the “-“ button right above the lock icon you clicked earlier.
  12. Select “Delete the home folder” and click “Delete User”.
